Veronica Huerta Foster, B.A.J.

About

Veronica Huerta Foster is a technical writer for the Department of Veterans Affairs, Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center, where she creates educational products on serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, and other related topics. She is also a certified peer support specialist for veterans, having received her accreditation from Loyola Marymount University in California in December 2020. Before beginning her career as a mental health advocate and writer, she spent a decade in healthcare, working as an emergency medical technician and psychiatric assistant in Los Angeles, where she developed a love for helping those with mental illness and addiction issues. She furthered this passion when working as a health technician at the West Los Angeles Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (DRRTP) or DOM for short. It is at the DOM that she created lasting bonds with veterans like herself in recovery from substance abuse and alcohol abuse disorders. She has seen how addiction treatment courts, inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment programs, and mental illness treatment play a pivotal role in shaping people’s lives for the better. She received her Associate of Arts in Journalism from Long Beach City College, where she worked on the Viking Newspaper, and her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from California State University Long Beach in 2021 where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She plans on returning to school to obtain a JD and continues working with veterans through the Veterans Suicide Crisis Line. She loves to spend her free time knitting, playing with her toddler son, dog, and exploring different eateries with her husband and family in Los Angeles.
